“We hunger for artworks that will compensate for our inner fragilities and help return us to a viable mean. …Art holds out the promise of inner wholeness.”

- Alain de Botton and John Armstrong, Art as Therapy

This Art Makes Me Feel… 2019
October 12-December 1, 2019 | Opening Reception October 23, 7-9pm

Have you ever looked at a painting and felt comfort because of it? Has an art work ever inspired you to feel gratitude for the simple joys in your life? Has an image affected your sense of balance, making you feel more calm or whole?

This Art Makes Me Feel… is an exhibition about the infinite ways in which art works can affect you. Take this opportunity to explore your responses to the carefully selected art works presented here. We invite you to share your reactions on Post-It notes and place them next to each art work.

This exhibition is part of the Friends of University Hospitals’ ongoing engagement and research activities to understand the impact that art has on patients, staff, and visitors in the hospital environment. In collaboration with the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, we selected art works based on researcher Judy Rollins’ seven categories of hospital art: humorous, calming, hopeful, historical, cultural, messaging, and interactive.

These categories provide a valuable framework for understanding what types of art can “promote positive outcomes for health”.

Take a look and consider what it is about each piece that inspires you. Talk to our Gallery Guides to learn more about the artists and the stories behind each piece and see if that changes how you respond to them.

We hope you find art works that you connect with and that you share with us how This Art Makes You Feel…
