Arts and Health Month

November 8, 2021 Guest User

We're pleased to announce that Arts and Health Month is back in a limited capacity for 2021! For the month of November, the gallery will feature artwork by our visual artists Kasie and Jennie, music by our music artist Bev and poetry by our literary artist Shirley. Read on to discover what each artist will be doing for the month.

Wading (from the Ice Cream Woman Series), 2021
48 x 60"
Acrylic, Oil and Spray Paint on Canvas
View the full series http://www.jennievegt.com/figurative
This painting is a part of a larger series called 'Vanilla Vanitas' which is a fantastical representation of one character's healing journey. This particular piece is about lovingly and carefully wading into the very stuff of which you are made; it is about reflection and self-compassion.

Safety Net (from the Matrilineal Threads series), 2018
Yarn, beads, gems.
Not for sale.

This crocheted piece is titled Safety Net and it's a part of a larger series titled Matrilineal Threads. Matrilineal Threads is a collaborative work with my mum, the late Ginette Lund. Although she was terminally ill, she had this sense of wonder and urgency. I wasn't sure why at the time, but I loved it. As soon as we finished a piece, she would throw it on the floor and say "What's next?".

The body became central to the work, as crochet emerged from our bodies and subsequently rendered the work flesh-like in their own right. The sculptures, crocheted skin and orifices, and textile appendages simultaneously draw familiar comfort and uncanny unease.
